BRUXISM
Treatment for TEETH GRINDING
We recognise the importance of addressing teeth grinding (bruxism), to alleviate jaw tension and pain, as well as to safeguard your dental health. Teeth grinding can also affect your lower face shape so is another factor we review if it's a concern.
Treatment itself is simple and effective: by safely injecting the masseter and temporalis muscles - key muscles involved in chewing and clenching - the objective is to reduce the intensity of teeth grinding, which often occurs unconsciously during sleep. This temporary muscle relaxation not only eases discomfort in the jaw and surrounding areas but also helps preserve tooth enamel by minimising excessive wear and potential enamel and tooth deterioration.
The injectable procedure is delivered by Dr Paris Acharya, Ardour's dual-certified aesthetic doctor and dentist (also former maxillofacial surgeon). Her expertise ensures a comprehensive approach to treating bruxism, promoting both relief and long-term dental protection.

This treatment is ideal for people experiencing chronic bruxism - characterised by frequent, involuntary teeth grinding or jaw clenching - especially when traditional methods like occlusal splints, behavioural therapy or medications have not provided sufficient relief.
It's particularly beneficial for those who have:
- Persistent jaw pain or tenderness, especially in the masseter or temporalis muscles
- Headaches or facial discomfort linked to teeth grinding
- Noticeable tooth wear, fractures, or damage to dental restorations
- Difficulty achieving restful sleep due to nocturnal grinding
- A history of unsuccessful treatment with night guards or muscle relaxants
This treatment may not be suitable if you are:
- Under 18 years of age
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Allergic to botulinum toxin or have a history of botulis
- Suffering from certain neurological conditions (e.g. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or myasthenia gravis)
If you meet these criteria and have not found symptom relief to date, this injectable treatment may offer a preventive option to reduce the frequency and severity of your bruxism-related symptoms.
As with any medical or doctor-administered aesthetic treatment, Dr Paris will invite you to a comprehensive medical consultation to discuss your hopes for treatment and suitability.
-
A common approach to treating bruxism disorder involves injecting the masseter muscle - the primary muscle responsible for chewing - with the goal of relaxing the muscle, effectively. Treatment temporarily inhibits the muscle's ability to contract, leading to muscle relaxation and, as a result, the frequency and intensity of teeth grinding and jaw clenching decrease, providing relief from associated symptoms. Additionally, the treatment may reduce the size of the masseter muscle over time, altering the shape of the jawline which may have developed a 'square'. appearance, The effects from treatment typically last several months, and the procedure is generally well-tolerated with minimal downtime.
-
This treatment involves minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch or sting during the injection process, which typically lasts only a few minutes. Dr Paris uses very fine needles and normally applies a topical numbing cream beforehand to further reduce any discomfort.
After treatment, patients can immediately return to normal activities. Some might experience minor side effects such as slight tenderness, temporary bruising, or redness at the injection sites, but these typically resolve within 24-48 hours. Unlike surgical interventions for bruxism, this treatment doesn't require recovery time.
-
You would typically notice the effects of treatment - that is, a notable reduction in teeth grinding and localised pain - at around 2 weeks after treatment.
These results may last up to 4-6 (or sometimes up to 12) months, at which time you may wish to repeat the procedure. -
A single initial treatment is normally sufficient to have the desired effect.
You may then wish to have treatment again - to maintain the reduced level of teeth grinding - from around 4-6 months or, as with some patients for whom treatment has a more enduring effect, from 12 months. Patients tend to book maintenance treatments every 6-12 months, depending on individual symptoms.
frequently asked questions
-
Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding or jaw clenching, is a condition characterised by sufferers involuntarily grinding or clenching their teeth, during the day (awake bruxism) or at night (sleep bruxism). While occasional teeth grinding is common, frequent or severe cases can lead to dental damage, jaw pain and other complications. The exact cause of bruxism isn't fully understood, but it's often associated with factors like stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, and certain medications.
Symptoms of bruxism can include worn-down or chipped teeth, jaw soreness, headaches, earaches and disrupted sleep. In some cases, it may also lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, causing pain and limited jaw movement. Children are particularly susceptible to bruxism, especially during sleep, and may outgrow the condition as they age.
Treatment for bruxism varies depending on its severity and underlying causes. For mild cases, lifestyle changes such as stress management techniques, improved sleep hygiene, and avoiding stimulants like caffeine and alcohol may be sufficient. Dentists often recommend custom-made mouthguards or splints to protect teeth from grinding during sleep. In more severe cases, therapies like muscle relaxants, biofeedback or neuromodulating injections may be considered.
It's important to consult a medical practitioner professional - such as Dr Paris - to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
-
Yes, bruxism and TMD (or temporomandibular joint disorder, sometimes referred to as TMJ which actually refers to the temporomandibular joint itself) are closely connected conditions. It is common to experience both as bruxism can contribute to TMJ symptoms, and TMJ disorders can lead to increased teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Treatment with muscle-relaxing injections effectively addresses these functional concerns, as well as chronic headaches which can also occur.
-
Bruxism can become more problematic with age for several reasons. While bruxism is most common during childhood, adolescence and young adulthood, older adults face additional challenges and stress. Tooth wear may be more pronounced in older adults due to a lifetime of use combined with the grinding action of bruxism.
Seniors may be more likely to grind their teeth because they are more likely to have medical conditions that can cause or worsen bruxism, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke. Additionally, seniors are more likely to take medications.
The cumulative effects of bruxism also become more apparent with age, as the repetitive facial expressions that occur when grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw are a culprit behind premature ageing of the lower face. -
Yes, muscle-relaxing injections for bruxism can change your facial appearance, but these changes are typically considered beneficial. The treatment works by reducing the size and activity of the masseter muscles, which can:
- Slim a square or angular jawline for a more defined facial appearance
- Decrease nerve signals to the muscle, temporarily reducing its size
- Create a more oval or heart-shaped face profile
These injections offer both cosmetic benefits by slimming down the jawline for a more defined facial appearance and medical relief by lessening discomfort in the jaw area
-
In some cases, masseter injections can lead to the appearance of jowls, particularly if the jawline loses muscular definition along with volume reduction in the masseter muscles. This is why it's crucial to choose an experienced provider who understands facial anatomy and proper injection techniques.
The risk of developing jowls can be minimised by:
- Finding a qualified, experienced medical practitioner
- The correct injection placement techniques & appropriate dosage being used
- Having realistic expectations about treatment outcomes
