HYPERHIDROSIS

Treatment for Excessive Sweating

While sweating is a healthy function of the body, excessive sweating (or hyperhidrosis) can be problematic, impacting your personal and professional life.

At Ardour, we help patients to reclaim confidence by offering a medical injectable treatment which targets overactive sweat glands in areas prone to excess sweat production - namely, underarms, hands, feet and face (craniofacial hyperhidrosis) - reducing perspiration in the treated area for up to six months after a single session. A member of the medical team delivers a solution using precision micro-injections to calm the signals that trigger excessive perspiration, meaning skin in that area is drier and more comfortable.

Should you wish to discuss whether treatment would be appropriate for you, we'll arrange a consultation with our medical team to assess your needs.

  • This treatment is ideal for people experiencing primary focal hyperhidrosis - characterised by excessive sweating in specific areas without an underlying medical cause.

It's particularly beneficial for those who have:

    - Persistent sweating in the armpits (axillary), palms (palmar), soles (plantar), or face (craniofacial)

    - Episodes occurring at least once a week

    - Sweating that interferes with daily activities or causes emotional distress

    - Symptoms that began before the age of 25

    - Family history of similar sweating issues

    - Sweating that is bilateral and relatively symmetrical

    - Sweating that stops during sleep

This treatment may not be suitable if you are:

    - Under 18 years of age

    - Pregnant or breastfeeding

    - Suffering from certain neurological conditions (e.g. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or myasthenia gravis)

If you meet these criteria and have not found symptom relief to date, this injectable treatment may offer a preventive option to reduce the frequency and severity of your hyperhidrosis symptoms.

As with any medical or doctor-administered aesthetic treatment, Dr Paris will invite you to a comprehensive medical consultation to discuss your hopes for treatment and suitability.

  • Excessive sweating injectables treat hyperhidrosis by blocking the nerve pathways that stimulate sweat production. When injected into areas like the underarms, hands or feet, treatment targets the eccrine sweat glands responsible for perspiration and work by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that signals these glands to produce sweat. By preventing this signal, the aim is to reduce or halt excessive sweating in the treated area. Results typically begin within a few days and may last for around three to six months, depending on the individual patient.

  • Injections to manage hyperhidrosis are usually well tolerated and not associated with significant discomfort, especially when effective pain relief is used for more senstive areas. Furthermore, the anticipated result of reduced excessive sweating tends to outweigh any temporary, minor discomfort.

The armpits involve a small number of injections and these are often described as feeling similar to mosquito bites. Equally, treatment for the face is well tolerated, with some patients experiencing no pain or discomfort at all.

A topical numbing cream is normally used or, for more sensitive areas such as the hands or feet, Dr Paris may discuss a nerve block to reduce any discomfort (when a fine needle is used to deliver local anesthetic close to the targeted nerve).

  • You would typically notice the effects of treatment - that is, a notable reduction in sweating - at around 2 weeks after treatment. These results may last up to 9 - 12 months, at which time you may wish to repeat the procedure.

  • A single initial treatment is normally sufficient to have the desired effect.

You may then wish to have treatment again - to maintain the reduced level of sweating - from around 9-12 months.

  • We will advise you not to have laser or waxing treatments for 2 weeks pre- and post-treatment.

You will also be recommended to:

    - avoid active skincare products & deodorant on the day

    - not to exercise for 24 hours after treatment

    - not to have saunas for 1 week after treatment

frequently asked questions

  • Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by excessive sweating that exceeds the body's normal requirements for temperature regulation. This condition can occur without typical triggers such as heat, physical activity or emotional stress.

    There are two main types:

    - Primary (Focal) Hyperhidrosis: affecting specific areas like the underarms, palms, feet or face. It often begins in childhood or adolescence and may have a genetic component.

    - Secondary (Generalised) Hyperhidrosis: caused by underlying medical conditions or medications, leading to excessive sweating over larger areas of the body.

People with hyperhidrosis may experience significant discomfort and emotional distress due to visible sweating and associated odours, impacting their daily activities and social and / or professional confidence.

In primary hyperhidrosis, the exact cause is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve overactivity of the sweat glands. Secondary hyperhidrosis results from conditions such as diabetes, menopause, infections, or certain medications.

Treatment options vary based on the severity and type of hyperhidrosis, including: topical antiperspirants (prescription-strength, containing aluminum chloride for localised sweating); oral medications (prescribed to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating); therapies (e.g. iontophoresis which uses electrical currents to reduce sweating, or microwave therapy); injectable treatments (to block the nerves causing excessive sweating); surgical options (in severe cases, surgical removal of sweat glands may be recommended).

It's important for anyone experiencing excessive sweating to consult with a medical practitioner - such as Dr Paris - to determine the most appropriate treatment based on their specific condition and needs.

  • Excessive sweating injections can safely and effectively treat hyperhidrosis in several areas of the body, including:

    - Underarms (axillary, the most commonly treated area)

    - Palms & soles (ie hands and feet)

    - Face & scalp (craniofacial. Includes the forehead & other facial areas)

    - Under breasts (submammary region)

    - Back, chest & trunk areas

    - Groin area

    - Gluteal cleft (between the buttocks)

These injections are an effective and safe treatment option for most hyperhidrotic areas of the body. The treatment is particularly effective for focal areas of excessive sweating and provides longer-lasting results than topical treatments.

  • Yes, excessive sweating injections can be particularly beneficial for women experiencing menopause-related sweating. Recent studies have shown promising results for menopausal women, particularly for facial and scalp sweating that commonly occurs during menopausal hot flushes.

By blocking signals to sweat glands, this treatment contributes to reducing perspiration in targeted areas, providing relief for those experiencing hot flushes and sweating.

It's important to distinguish between hormonal sweating related to menopause and primary hyperhidrosis, as the treatment approach may vary. A consultation with Dr Paris or other suitably qualified doctor will help determine if these injections are the most appropriate treatment option for you individually.

  • Yes, excessive sweating injections are suitable for men. Hyperhidrosis is a common problem for men and women and this treatment has been used as an effective solution since 1994 so has a reassuring safety record. Men frequently seek treatment due to discomfort from excessive perspiration and the worry of visible sweat marks, significantly impacting their professional and personal lives.

The treatment is particularly popular among men for sweating in these areas:

    - Underarms

    - Palms of hands

    - Face & scalp

    - Groin

The injections only take about 10 – 15 minutes and work by blocking nerve impulses that cause sweat glands to produce sweat, without affecting other nerve functions.
